Does my audio leave my phone?
Updated 3 September 2026
It depends on the engine you choose. Memo tells you before each recording, and the answer never changes silently.
On-device AI
The audio, the transcript, the summary and the chat all stay on your iPhone. Nothing is uploaded to Memo or to anyone else. Memo’s servers never see the recording. This is why On-device AI works without an account and without a connection.
Cloud AI
The audio file is uploaded to Memo’s servers and passed to AI providers for transcription and summarisation. The results come back to your phone and are stored in your account so you can open the memo on your device. The Privacy Policy names every provider and explains what each one receives.
Memo asks before every upload. If you decline, nothing is sent.
What Memo collects in both cases
Memo keeps usage and crash statistics so we can fix problems, and, if you sign in, your account details. None of that includes the content of your memos. The full list is in the Privacy Policy.
Deleting
Delete a memo in the app to remove it. To remove everything in your account, including audio files, use Delete account in Settings. See Delete memos and your account.
Related questions
Is my audio used to train AI models?
No. Audio and text are used only to produce your transcript, summary and chat answers. Memo does not use them to train models, and the providers process them only to deliver the result.
How do I know which engine a memo used?
You choose the engine before recording and in Settings. Cloud AI asks before every upload and needs a signed-in account, so if you were not asked and never signed in, the memo never left the phone.
Where are Cloud AI memos stored?
In your Memo account on Google Cloud servers in the United States, until you delete the memo or the account.
